March 26, 2017

Here in our Friends Meeting room, we have a little sign with just three simple and, in my view, profoundly spiritual words found on maps all over the world:
“You are here.”
Those words apply wherever we are, of course.  When we are in this room, they are true at least in a physical sense.  We strive to be here mentally, as well – though I confess I did just take an involuntary nap!
But the main thing is that, of all the places we could be – including in wholesome and nourishing reflection alone elsewhere, in the loving company of others elsewhere, in the service of others elsewhere – it is here in this hour we come to be in both spirit and fellowship.  We come to hold the door open, so to speak, for others who may wish to join us.  We come to be with others, and to contribute to others, in a safe place for exploring, sharing and restoring the spirit within each of us.  And, when we rise at the end of the meeting hour and hold hands in closing silence, we can have what for me is the experience of being here, each hand holding a hand of Jesus.

March 19, 2017

The other day, from my sketchy memory came Jesus’s statement, “that which you do unto the least of these my brethren you do unto me.”  All I remembered was Jesus referring to acts of kindness.
Since, in my line of work, one thinks of both sides of an issue, I realized that the same principle would apply to mistreatment of Jesus’s brethren – during his life and today.
Applying another principle from my work - when in doubt, review the statutory language - I look today at the Bible.  There in the Book of Matthew, chapter 25, verse [31-] 41, appears, ‘When the Son of man shall come, he shall say also unto them . . . I was hungry, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not.  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.’

Equality

We all - rich and poor, healthy and sick, of any culture, beliefs, skin color, age, family background - have the same 24 hours in the day.  Barring addiction or other mental illness, we all have the same capacity to fill those hours with the truth of our own experience, growth, love, forgiveness, kindness, joy and peace.
