God has given us so many teachers. First we have each other. But a couple of my favorite teachers have had
four legs, not two. Our dogs have taught
me much about unconditional love and about the unrestrained expression of zest
for Life.
This week came a new lesson. On Tuesday, our two-year-old dog awoke with
his hind legs practically paralyzed.
Fearing the worst, I began to think about losing him, about having to
give him back. On his face was an
expression of great peace. If need be,
he was ready to go. I marveled at that. Then I saw that he deserved that peace. He had always done his job. He was always himself. He had made the most of the gift of life.
