What
is heaven? What is this wondrous reward
promised for living a life of love and service?
Is it a place seen only after death?
Is it a state whose inhabitants are blind to the suffering of those they
left behind and deaf to the pleas of the living for assistance, for relief from
loneliness, grief, pain and fear? I
believe God is much more generous than that.
I believe heaven is the experience that everything -- everything -- is
fine exactly the way it is. This
experience is ours in life, even now, when we truly surrender to, and trust in,
the omnipotence of God, of love. Then we
can, like Jesus, come out of heaven and into the world. We can feel pain. We can see that, from the human point of
view, things could be much better. And,
strengthened by the comfort of heaven at hand, we can comfort others and work
for a better world.
