Sometime in
the late 1970’s, the first time I ever spoke in Meeting:
Near
His death on the cross, Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not
what they do.” I always used to think He
was speaking of Pontius Pilate and the Romans and others who condemned Him and
crucified Him. I do not believe that any
more. Was He not speaking also of those
who saw injustice and did nothing to stop it?
Was he not speaking of all of us, even today, who do not know -- and
often do not bother to see, let alone use -- our capacity for preventing or reducing
injustice in the world?
